Overview

Plane is an open-source project management tool that runs entirely on your own hardware, an alternative to Jira, Linear, or Asana. Track work as issues with custom properties and states, group them into time-boxed cycles, break large efforts into modules, plan ahead on a roadmap, and see progress in built-in analytics.

Features

  • Issues with custom properties, states, cycles, and modules
  • Lists, kanban boards, calendars, spreadsheets, and Gantt views
  • A rich, real-time collaborative editor behind pages and issue descriptions
  • Roadmaps and built-in analytics to track progress across a workspace
  • malmo provisions and manages the database and cache Plane needs, so there is nothing to wire up

Setting up

Plane starts with no accounts at all. Open the app and you will be taken to a setup screen where you create the instance administrator, then create a workspace and invite the rest of the team. Administration (authentication options, email, and instance settings) lives in a separate "god-mode" area linked from the app.

Good to know

Member invites, magic-link sign-in, and notification emails are delivered by email. Until an administrator adds an outgoing email account in malmo and binds it to this app, those features quietly do nothing while everything else works; you can still add members from workspace settings, and everyone signs in with an email and password.

Plane is a large application: a web frontend, a public-pages site, an admin console, an API, background workers, a collaboration server, a message broker, and object storage for attachments. It is comfortable on a box with a few gigabytes of memory to spare, and slower to install than most apps because there are several images to download.
