Overview
OpenClaw is a self-hosted personal AI assistant. It runs a gateway on your own server that connects to the model providers you choose (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, and others) and gives that assistant real tools, all from a single web dashboard. Your conversations, memory, and workspace files stay on your machine rather than in someone else's cloud.

Setting up
malmo generates your access token automatically at install. Find it on this app's detail page and use it to sign in to the dashboard and to pair the mobile and desktop companion apps:

Add at least one model provider so the assistant can answer. Paste an API key for Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or OpenRouter, or point the built-in custom (OpenAI-compatible) provider at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. You can supply these at install or later in the dashboard's Settings. Then open the app, sign in with your token, and start chatting.
Good to know
- Model access and web search need internet access plus your own provider API key. Your conversations, memory, and workspace files stay on your server.
- Outbound messaging channels (Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp) and the companion apps work fully. Channels that must receive calls at their own public address (Microsoft Teams, phone/SMS-style webhooks) are not available in this hosted form, because each app is served at one public address.
- Tools or skills that try to download extra operating-system packages at runtime will not work. Anything built into the image, including the browser tool, works normally.
