Chatto
Self-hosted team and community chat with rooms, threads, and reactions.
by Chatto Corp
Overview
Chatto gives a team, a club, or a group of friends its own chat server, organized into channels and private rooms. It covers the essentials of a modern chat app while keeping every message on your own hardware instead of a vendor's servers.
Features
- Channels and private rooms with threaded replies and reactions
- Mentions, file and image attachments, and full-text-searchable history
- Accounts created with an email address and a password
- A single lightweight Go process backed by NATS JetStream
Setting up
Chatto sends a one-time verification code by email to create any account, so before anyone can sign up, an admin must bind an outgoing email provider under Settings -> Outgoing email. Once that's done, sign up with one of the owner email addresses configured at install time to become the server's administrator:
- Owner email: the address (or addresses) entered as "Owner email addresses" during install
Good to know
Voice and video calls, and screensharing, are switched off: they need a media server holding open ports directly on the host, which this platform doesn't grant to apps. The call buttons simply aren't shown; text chat, threads, and attachments are unaffected.
